I was with AACS @ Hahn from Dec 56 to Dec 59. Iknew several guys in the 586th who used to frequent a Gasthaus in Hasslebach. I was aware of the Matador sites while stationed there though not a frequent visitor. And also Metro Tango. The Launch pads at Wuscheim are still in place as of May 2007.The Hundheim GLCM site is obviously still there, but it is a Rock Concert Faciltiy now. Metro Tango is a huge Re-cycling Plant now.

Great site! I found this while fact checking my father's memoirs. My father was assigned to the Mace missile and we lived in Mastershausen in 1961 before moving to Birkenfeld Air Station in 1962. Thanks for the memories from my youth and the newfound perspective I have on my father's time in the Mace missile program!

Building interiors are trashed. Sqdn designators on inside of outer wall, and inside building still visible and readable. Bundeswehr owns it, but doesn't seem to care to much who comes and goes. Some Metro Tango buildings in use by large German Re-cycling operation. Hahn Air Base now Flughafen Hahn for Charter flights to vacation spots. Huge operation. Hung out on occassion with some guys from one of the the 586th organizations(maybe 405th)in and around Kastellaun, Hasselbach, and other small towns. F-86-D's with the 496th and F-100's with the I believe the 50th were the active A/C operating there. Still recall the heavy fog and harsh winters. Miserable flying conditions. .

It was an interesting experience to be Army working with the Air Corp. My rotation came up & I came home . We ran a lot of convoys for a long time bringing in sand to extend the runway & make hardstands for , as I recall it , the F-86 planes.Theykept three of these fighter planes right beside our motor pool with heaters on them & the pilots in the ready house. Each time they changed the planes they would test the nose guns in the pit, sure made a lot of noise, & scary too.

I was at Hahn AFB in the 405th Squadron on the TM76A at Site IV from 1961 to 64 as a launch crew member. I stumbled on this web page just surfing to see if anything existed of the 405th ever being at Hahn had been recorded for history. This web page was a "very pleasant surprize", besides a nice piece of work!
Besides the Hahn experience refining my taste for good beer, castle storming, and fun, the Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile bit caused me to change in how I viewed life. It could change in an instant.
When the Berlin Wall went up I woke up one morning and looked out the barracks window to find the Thunder Birds F-100's sitting out on the tarmac. I thought, "The Thunder Birds are here! Things are a lot worse than they are letting on!"
During the Cuban Missile bit, I was on shift when we got the first code word to start the launch sequence. The Launch Commander said, "My God this is it. This is it!" All four of us looked at each other in numbed shock. We started the engines, and waited for the "fire" code word. After 20 minutes of waiting with the engines idiling we got a call from Capgun to stand down.
Not until about 3 years ago did I see the rest of the world finally beginning to learn how close we had come. But "WE" knew.
All in all I learned a lot in those 3 years. And not until I retired a year ago and thought back to the beginning of my working life did I suddenly realize what an influence and shaping of the rest of my life the experience at Hahn and the USAF had played. I would never have guessed.
Your life may change in an instant, but it takes a lot of history with it. Hope it has been as good to you as it has to me.
