George's Guide to RV Campsites

Full hook-up (Electric 30 Amp/Water/Sewer or Dump station)

This collection of information is updated after every one of our camping trips. Our quick review information is somewhat different from most campsite reviews, and each visited site includes a Blog address for an expanded commentary.

Campgrounds we have visited are marked by the individual park logo or the cap pin.

Click on the Cap Pin for the Blog with more information, commentary, and photos of the campgrounds we have visited.

The full web page and reservation links are part of most of the campgrounds listed. The direct telephone numbers of the campsites are posted.

Almost all of the on-line services require two-day minimum over any weekend for a single night stay, however, calling the campground directly allows the park to charge for a single night if a site is available. Many campgrounds hold 2 or 3 campsites as "Walk-up" sites. I listed the campsites by distance from Port Charlotte, FL, on Florida's lower west coast. Complete information is available on-line at each respective organization's homepage.

We favor State Parks and Federal Parks, and have limited knowledge of Commercial RV campgrounds. Florida residents over the age of 65 pay half-price on all Florida reservations. Holders of the Federal Golden Passport, or its equivelant, receive a 50% discount at most federal facilities.

There are several major on-line registration services. Several of the ones we use are:

  1. ReserveAmerica.com, which handles all of the Florida State Parks
  2. Recreation.gov, which handles all Federal Parks and Corps of engineers, Bureau of Land Management facilities
  3. gastateparks.org/reservations, which only works in MS Internet Explorer, for Ga State Parks

The Florida RV Trade Association maintains an interactive page of all member commercial RV campgrounds in Florida at Florida RV Trade Association Homepage. They do not list any City, County, State, or Federal Campgrounds, or non-member campgrounds, however.

Good Kayaking on very weedy lake, but the concrete spillway at the end of the lake which leads to Myakka river is a one way trip down river, you can't get back into the lake: plenty of Gators, you really don't want to get in the water here. Great Live Oaks, has a short, suspended "Forest Walk"just off the park main road.

Very unique park, the prairie is a great place to stargaze-no light polution. Avoid eastern side of family loop, no shade. Saw our first Caracara New facilities, clean and well kept! All campsites are dirt/sand with firepit and table. Sites are flat and clean.
Dirt road the entire park, 5 miles from main gate to campground, could be messy in the rainy season.

Rainbow Springs Cap Pin

Rainbow Springs State Park

Northeast Region
(352) 465-8555
Once a famous Florida tourist attraction, the park is now part of the Florida State Parks. The Rainbow River is one of the best to leisurely paddle or tube. Avoid weekends! We will be back to this park! The Campground has two sections, both with new restrooms/showers. Campsites are graveled, level and have sewer hookups as well as 30/50 amp service. Few sites with shade, some have no privacy. Main park is 7 miles away and not connected to the campground by any trails or paths. Canoe and kayak access, office has dollies. Boats may be temporarily stored at the launch point, bring your own locks and chains.

Blue Spring

Blue Spring State Park
2100 W. French Avenue, Orange City 32763
Central Region
(386) 775-3663
Blue Spring is a great day park, but rates only 1 1/2 stars as a campground, unless you like trains! You can't see them, of course, but you will hear them at all hours of the day and night as a major CSX trunk line runs adjacent to the campground! The trains run 24 hours a day, seven days a week! Few sites with any shade, and few, if any of the sites are level! Most of the campsites are badly humped and sloped to one side or the other. Some sites are both humped and sloped, just plain ragged! Site 20 sloped so badly to the rear we hard a hard time disconnecting the trailer! After we double-chocked it, of course! Hooking up again was no fun, either! The people leaving our site (20) when we got there got stuck in the sand! Basically a tenter's campground, the paths to the toilet/showers are unmarked and primitive. Basically scrub foliage with some very young trees. Dump station was flooded when we arrived and could not be seen! Facilities are old, but very clean! Site numbers are imbedded in the asphalt and hard to see when covered with sand. Campground meets requirements, but barely.
