The Matador

The TM-61C Mobility Era

Each T-61C squadron had three flights. Each Squadron had six ZEL ( in 1958 up gunned to 8 launchers per Squadron). Six launchers each squadron were kept on either Quick Reaction Alert or Victor Alert.

  1. There were 100 vehicles per squadron. 50 of which were self powered.
  2. Approximately 170 airmen in each squadron.
  3. Most of the personnel were assigned as drivers.
  4. Three mess vans during dispersal operations. Each squadron theoretically capable of launching 20 missiles in 9 hours.

Another reference mentions a total of 28 vehicles of various types required to support the (a) TM-61C system Included a launcher, transporter, special purpose check out and targeting equipment, ground handling equipment, servicing equipment. The prime movers were standard Army 5-ton tractors. A Coles 20-ton 39 foot mobile crane was also assigned.

En-route to the dispersed launch site the missile was in 4 parts, fuselage, wings, warhead and booster. At the launch site a crew of 10 men took 90 minutes to assemble and prepare the missile for launch.
